Symbolism of the Pineapple

The pineapple has become an enduring expression of welcome and hospitality, as well as friendship, generosity, and other forms of social warmth and graciousness. But, do you know why?

History records that New England sea captains would spear a pineapple outside their homes on gateposts or on their front doors as a symbol of safe return after traveling the perilous trade routes in the Caribbean. The pineapple was an invitation for friends to visit, share food and drink, and listen to tales of the captain’s voyage. This concept of hospitality – the warmth, charm and style with which guests were taken into the home – was a central element of daily life.

As the tradition grew, in larger, affluent homes, the dining room doors were kept closed to heighten guests’ suspense about the table being readied on the other side. At the appointed moment, and with the maximum amount of pomp and drama, the doors were flung open to reveal the evening’s main event and crowning food piece. The pineapple which was the visual keystone of the feast and home naturally came to symbolize the high spirits of the social events themselves. Starting in seaport towns on the East Coast, the fruit was also an inspiration to craftsmen who sculpted and carved pineapples in stone and wood onto the exterior facades and interior surfaces of mansions and buildings of prominence. The pineapple symbolized those intangible appreciated in social gatherings; expressing the sense of welcome, good cheer, warmth and generosity.

The pineapple indeed has a colorful history and is today heralded as the princess of fruits and credited as the symbol of hospitality and welcome. Today the motif is still celebrated as a design element and you can find fine examples throughout many historic homes and estates in the South. If you look carefully around these old homes, it’s not uncommon to find the pineapple cleverly carved in areas around the front gate, bedpost, main foyer, staircase, and fireplace mantle – all places where guests would tend to gather.

As you can see, the rich symbolism paired with Melinda’s thirteen years living in the South makes the pineapple a perfect inspiration for our event company logo. Melinda Brown Events strives to produce charming events that leave attendees with a feeling of warm hospitality and divine graciousness. We welcome the opportunity to serve you and your guests in this way.
